Expansion of the Aeronautical Study for the special helicopter airfield Donauwörth IFR RNAV for EGNOS based APV/LPV approach procedures

June 2013 | Safety Assessment

In February 2012 GfL has finalised an Aeronautical Study for the special helicopter airfield Donauwörth (DON) which includes a safety analysis regarding an existing penetration of the Visual Segment Surface (VSS, according to ICAO Doc. 8168 PANS-OPS) as a part of the IFR protected areas (see here). German ATS provider DFS had suggested to perform an Aeronautical Study to prove that suitable compensation measures can ensure safe flight operations despite the severe penetration of the VSS. These compensation measures included an increase of the OCA/H at DON that has been introduced by the BAF in spring 2012. In the meantime the EGNOS satellite augmentation system received approval to be used for safety-of-life applications allowing the implementation of APV procedures (SBAS). The application of APV procedures at DON may again reduce the currently increased OCA/H values. GfL is tasked to analyse the possible implementation of these procedures at DON, this also includes extensive flight tests.
