GfL delivers safety assessment concerning glare probabilities during approach and departure at Freiburg airport caused by photovoltaic systems

July 2017 | Safety Assessment

On behalf of the city Freiburg im Breisgau GfL analyzed possible glare of flight crews during approach and departure procedures at Freiburg airport within a risk assessment. Cause for this is the planned installation of photovoltaic modules in close proximity to the airport. For this purpose, glare probabilities caused by reflecting sunlight were quantified by using GfL’s in-house developed software GlareTech at first and operational consequences were estimated. Consequently, tolerable risks were identified following the ICAO PANS-ADR classification scheme. Effective risk mitigation measures were finally derived according to the ALARP philosophy allowing for safe flight operations.
