Potential Effects of a new football Arena in proximity to Freiburg Airport onto the Safety of Flight Operations

October 2015 | Safety Assessment

The city of Freiburg (Breisgau) seeks for a planning commitment to build a new football arena of SC Freiburg with a capacity of plus 25.000 visitors close to the existing airfield of Freiburg Airport. Concern raises on whether the remarkable building with more than 20 m height may induce severe turbulences onto the runway respectively the final approach and take-off area. Even though the prevailing wind conditions were judged to be non-critical for flight operations during the formal site evaluation process (Raumordnungsverfahren), criticism on too vague analyses so far were formulated. GfL was consequently awarded to investigate the safety of flight operations assuming the stadium being built as currently planned. This study will be conducted in close cooperation with Wacker Company, responsible for detailed wind field simulations based on dedicated low speed wind tunnel experiments.
