Completion of the fuel consumption analysis of CDA profiles at the airports of Hannover, Frankfurt/Main and Munich in the context of the DFS initiative “Optimized Flying”

June 2014 | Performance Analyses

In the context of the DFS initiative “Optimized Flying” GfL has evaluated the fuel burn of airplanes which perform a so called Continuous Descent Approach (CDA) at German commercial airports. The results have been compared to conventional approaches. A specially developed method made it possible to determine the fuel consumption of specific flights based on radar and weather data. In this way, almost 8,000 flights have been analyzed.

The comparison with real fuel consumption data has shown that the method is valid. Furthermore optimized decent profiles where used to prove even more potential for fuel saving beside the established procedure mentioned above.

The Airlines Condor, Lufthansa and Airberlin are involved in the initiative “Optimized Flying”.
